How to Easily Knit Baby Booties
A Simple Step-by-Step Pattern for Beginners
Nothing says love like a handmade gift — and baby booties are the perfect blend of adorable and practical. This easy knit pattern uses straight needles and basic stitches, so even beginner knitters can create a charming pair in just a few hours.

Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Soft DK or worsted weight (cotton or baby acrylic blends work great)
- Needles: US 6 (4 mm) straight needles
- Tapestry needle for seaming
- Scissors
- Optional: ribbon or buttons for embellishment
Stitches Used:
- Knit (K)
- Purl (P)
- Knit 2 together (K2tog)
- Yarn over (YO)
Pattern: Knit Flat, Seam Later

Sole + Foot:
- Cast on 28 stitches.
- Knit 10 rows in garter stitch (knit every row).
- On Row 11: Knit 12, K2tog, YO, K2tog, Knit 12
(this creates a little decorative eyelet for a tie, optional) - Knit 9 more rows in garter stitch.
Top of Bootie (Instep):
- Knit 10, bind off 8 stitches, knit last 10. You now have 10 stitches on each side.
- Work only the center 8 stitches (from the bind-off gap) in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for 10 rows.
This forms the top of the bootie.
Joining the Top to Sides:
- Pick up 10 side stitches on the right, knit across the 8 instep stitches, pick up 10 side stitches on the left = 28 stitches again.
- Knit 6–8 rows in garter stitch for the cuff. You can also do ribbing (K1, P1) for a snugger fit.
Finishing:
- Bind off loosely.
- Fold the bootie in half and sew the sole and back seam using mattress stitch or whip stitch.
- Weave in ends.
- (Optional) Thread a ribbon through the eyelets or add a button for decoration.
Tips:
- Use a soft, washable yarn — baby skin is sensitive!
- Make a matching pair with reverse colors for extra cuteness
- Knit a few in different sizes and colors to keep on hand for gifts
